Bet Shira - Port Townsend's Jewish Community

Learning & Ritual Life at Bet Shira

Bet Shira is a place where Jewish learning and Jewish living come together. Our educational and ritual activities are designed to help people of all ages connect with Torah, tradition, community, and the rhythms of Jewish time.

We are a small, intergenerational, participatory Jewish community. That means learning does not only happen in a classroom, and ritual is not something we simply watch from the sidelines. Whether through family programs, Torah study, holiday gatherings, Shabbat prayer, or preparation for becoming B'nei Mitzvah, Bet Shira invites each person to take part in the ongoing life of the Jewish people.

Children & Young Families

Bet Shira offers warm, joyful, and accessible Jewish experiences for children and young families. Our family programming helps children build positive associations with Jewish life through songs, stories, movement, Torah learning, holiday activities, and community gathering.

Programs such as Tot Shabbat and Shoreshim (our young families program) create space for young children and their families to experience Jewish tradition in an age-appropriate, hands-on way. We emphasize Jewish joy, family connection, seasonal rhythms, and the beauty of Shabbat and holidays.

Children are introduced to Hebrew words, blessings, Torah stories, Jewish values, and ritual practices in a way that feels natural and alive. Our goal is to help families build a foundation for Jewish life at home and in community.

B'nei (Bar and Bat) Mitzvah Studies

Becoming B'nai Mitzvah is one of the most meaningful milestones in Jewish life. At Bet Shira, B'nai Mitzvah preparation is personalized, supportive, and rooted in the student’s growth as a Jewish person.

Students work on Hebrew, Torah reading, prayer leadership, Jewish values, and the meaning of taking on greater responsibility within the Jewish community. The process is not only about preparing for a ceremony. It is about helping each student understand their place in the Jewish story and develop the confidence to participate in Jewish life.

Families are also part of the journey. We see B'nai Mitzvah as a communal transformation: a moment when a young person steps forward, family and community gather around them, and the next generation is welcomed into deeper Jewish responsibility and belonging.

Adult Learning

Jewish learning is a lifelong practice. Bet Shira offers adult learning opportunities throughout the year, including Torah study, holiday learning, and discussion circles connected to Jewish history, practice, ethics, and spirituality.

Our adult education programs are designed to be thoughtful, welcoming, and participatory. Some gatherings focus on the weekly Torah portion, while others explore the meaning of Jewish holidays, ritual practices, Hebrew prayers, or contemporary Jewish questions.

No prior background is required. We welcome people who are new to Jewish learning, returning after time away, or looking to deepen an already rich Jewish practice.

Prayer, Shabbat & Holiday Ritual

Ritual life is at the heart of Bet Shira. We gather for Kabbalat Shabbat, Shabbat morning services, holiday celebrations, and lifecycle moments throughout the year.

Our services are participatory, intimate, and community-based. We combine traditional Jewish prayer with accessible explanations, melodies, Torah reading, discussion, and opportunities for members to take part. We aim to create ritual experiences that are spiritually meaningful, welcoming, and rooted in the beauty of Jewish tradition.

From Friday night candlelight and song, to Shabbat morning Torah reading, to the cycle of the Jewish holidays, Bet Shira offers ways to mark sacred time together. These gatherings help us pause from the rush of everyday life, reconnect with one another, and live into the rhythms of Jewish community.
